Eddie the Eagle

Do you have to be a winner to be a winner?

I love the movie “Eddie the Eagle” (2015). based on the true story of the English ski-jumper who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

Despite all the doubters, Eddie enters the ski-jump, and becomes the inspirational story of the Olympics. He doesn’t win, but at least he gave it a go. But Eddie’s nickname “The Eagle” is obviously ironic.

No matter how much he believed in himself, he still did come last by a long way. Only an eagle can soar like an eagle. And only a winner can be a winner.

But God’s promise to us is this: if we believe in and belong to Team Jesus, we will soar on wings like eagles. That’s because they will be his wings and not ours. No matter how much of a loser we are. No matter how little we have to believe in ourselves.

God is the winner who believes in us. But please don’t do the ski-jump. Not unless you have a lot of insurance and want an ironic nickname.
