You Must Squeegee the Shower

- and other useless rules

In my house we have this rule: Last Person to Shower Must Squeegee the Shower.

It’s a great rule. But it’s had the opposite effect.

If I know I’m going to be the last person to shower, then I simply don’t shower. Because I don’t want to be the guy who has to squeegee the shower. Can you see what’s happened? Because of a good rule, the shower doesn’t get squeegeed.

It was perfectly good rule. But my selfish sinful human spirit wrecked it.

It’s the same in the Bible. It’s full of God’s good laws: “Love your Neighbour.” But our sinful human spirit perverted it to: “Love your neighbour. Hate your enemy” (Matt. 5:43) This is why Jesus comes. Not to give us more rules. But to give us a new Spirit.

A Spirit that loves our enemies. And yes, a Spirit that squeegees the shower when it’s my turn.
