Light of the World

The Salvation Poem Project takes us into a 2D, hand-drawn, nostalgic animated world in an industry dominated by computer-generated imagery. Light of the World retells the story of Jesus’ life and influence through the narrative voice of a teenage boy named John (Benjamin Jacobson).
Directors John Schafer and Tom Bancroft take the journey of the Messiah’s life from birth to resurrection and make it into an animated adventure. The team honours the Gospel accounts and gives them an Aladdin-like spin, helping families to engage with a new excitement. Tony Bancroft’s story weaves the truths of history in with the imaginative eye of a child. For the cinematic theologians who desire to scrutinise how these films represent the most important person in history, there is no need to worry. Within the 84 minutes, they manage to get all of the essential aspects of Jesus’ story incorporated to ensure the message will encourage all who watch to take stock of their own faith.
What stands out from the outset is how this team has given this animated tale a nostalgic twist by taking viewers back to the two-dimensional realm of classic cinema. The visuals are reminiscent of the Disney Renaissance, as they evoke the look of Hercules, transporting us back in time to the Roman-dominated era. Yet, this styling does more to complement the storyline than detract, as the voice acting provides the essential edge that keeps this look modern and enticing. Jesus is depicted as the man of many sorrows, yet approachable by all ages, along with the winsome disciples who bring the passion, comedy and humanity needed to support the teen’s narrative.
Light of the World will provide families with an option to share with others, as they hope to share the message of Jesus with others. The quality of animation, storytelling and evangelistic fervour comes through as the purpose of this film to help a new generation to see and hear the Gospel.

What should parents know about Light of the World?
Over the years, parents have asked about a film that helps families tell children about Jesus without scaring them. Until now, there have been few on offer. The Salvation Poem Project balances the realities of the era and how all ages were able to connect with the message of Jesus’ life and death. Yet, they depict the overall message through the eyes of a child, but younger children might be scared during some of the more confronting scenes. The film is suited for children four years and up.
The filmmakers do a great job of sharing every aspect of the Gospel accounts. Even though they do not include every element of Jesus’ story, this movie will allow parents, grandparents, and guardians to open the Bible with their children and show them how the Saviour’s story is for us all.
